Govardhan Peetha — Shankara's Seat
The great philosopher-teacher Adi Shankara traveled across the whole of India setting up four major holy centers of learning, one in each direction, and he chose to place his eastern center right here in Puri.
Govardhan Peetha, established by Adi Shankara in the eighth century, is one of the four cardinal Amnaya Mathas discussed in this collection's saints cluster, with the Puri Shankaracharya presiding specifically over the eastern quadrant of India. The current Shankaracharya lineage continues to participate in specific Srimandir ceremonies with clearly codified ritual authority, ensuring this ancient institutional link remains a living part of the temple's ongoing ceremonial life.
