Chapter 13

Panchasakha Prophecies

Five poets, one Bhavishya Malika, and the end of the age.

Visions of ages to come

The Bhavishya Malika Prophecies

Six hundred years ago, five wise saints sat down and wrote a strange, mysterious book describing things that would happen far, far in the future — and many people today believe those very things are already coming true, right now, in our own lifetimes. This chapter explores that book of prophecy, its predictions about floods, mountains, and the final avatar of Vishnu himself.

The Book of the Future

Around six hundred years ago, five brilliant and holy saints came together and wrote a truly extraordinary book, one that seems, remarkably, to describe events happening in our own modern world right now, even though it was written so many centuries before any of it took place.

Achyutananda's 600-Year Predictions

One of these five saints, a man named Achyutananda, wrote down predictions about all sorts of wild and dramatic future events — and remarkably, many of his devoted followers today point out that quite a few of those predictions genuinely seem to have already come true.

The Kalki Prophecy

According to the Bhavishya Malika, the tenth and final incarnation of Vishnu — a mighty warrior-god named Kalki — will one day emerge directly out of Jagannath's own wooden form, arriving to set the world right again.

Kalki will emerge from Jagannath's form to establish dharma.

The Human-Elephant Form

Certain very old, secret verses describe a strange and mysterious future form that God will one day take — something described as being part man and part elephant, a description that even experts still don't fully agree on how to interpret.

The Sun Rising in the West

One especially dramatic prophecy claims that, as the world approaches its final age, the sun itself will begin rising in the west instead of the east, and mountains will suddenly burst open in ways no one has ever seen before.

The Great Flood

According to the Bhavishya Malika, the town of Puri will one day be swallowed up by a great flood from the sea — though, remarkably, the sacred wheel sitting atop the temple is prophesied to remain safely above the rising water the whole time.

The Final Rush to Jagannath

The prophecy also describes an extraordinary final scene: that in the very last days of this current age, people from absolutely everywhere in the world will rush toward Jagannath, seeking safety and salvation in his presence alone.

The Sealed Chaturdha Verses

There are ancient sealed scrolls, hidden away and carefully protected by certain families, that tradition says can only be opened when the very end of this current age of the world finally arrives.

The Palm-Leaf Prophecies

Some families living in Odisha today still possess the original ancient palm-leaf manuscripts containing these predictions, and remarkably, some of the writing on them still hasn't been fully decoded or understood, even after all these centuries.

Their sandhi bhasha (twilight language) requires initiated interpretation.

The Manjusha Pothi Time-Locks

Some of these ancient prophecy books are said to be sealed shut with a kind of time-lock, unable to be opened for hundreds and hundreds of years, until the exact right astronomical moment finally arrives.

Whether every single prediction comes true exactly as written or not, this book of prophecy shows something beautiful about how deeply these saints trusted Jagannath — trusted him enough to believe he holds the whole future of the world safely within his wooden hands.
